Review:

The American Society of Magical Negroes skilfully blends comedy with fantasy and romance to explore race-relations and systemic racism in contemporary western society. Told through a satirical lens, our story follows Aren (Smith), a young man who sees his life transform after being introduced to a secret-society comprised of black people with magical powers – used specifically to ease the discomfort of white people in every-day life. The more time Aren spends in the society, the more he begins to question the need for assimilation and the assumption that he must cater towards this white fragility. Early reviews have praised Libii’s film for its ‘cinematic wizardry’ (Focus Features) and sharp wit, commending The American Society of Magical Negroes for fantastic performances across the board, resulting in a thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining watch that you won’t want to miss.
