Review:

Deep in the wilds of Finland, by Korvavunturi mountain, a small community ekes out a living from the hunting of reindeer. Upon the mountain itself, a ruthless businessman pursues his lifelong ambition to discover a childhood dream, under the pretence of carrying out seismic tests. Only our hero, Pietari, a boy young enough to still believe in Santa Claus, senses what is on the brink of being unleashed. This Christmas, the children of Korvavunturi mountain will have to be very, very good...

Helander’s first feature film, Rare Exports will be a delight both to fans of his previous shorts (Rare Exports, Inc. and Rare Exports: the official safety instructions), and newcomers to his work alike. With tension and comedy held in perfect balance, this dark fantasy outstrips the saccharine-sweet fare we have come to expect from Hollywood in the holiday season. Arguably in the same field as other festive favourite A Nightmare Before Christmas, Rare Exports surprises and delights with every plot twist and turn. With some truly stunning cinematography - a chase scene at the end showcases the remote scenery with skill - Jalmari Helander gives us his first feature film bursting with confidence.

For those who like their Christmas films with a little more bite; Rare Exports is that rare animal, a festive classic that can be watched and enjoyed by all year round.
